The BMI Formula Explained

Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple calculation using a person’s height and weight. The formula is used to give you an idea of whether you’re underweight, a healthy weight, overweight, or obese for your height. Below is the tool to calculate your own BMI, followed by a more detailed breakdown of the formulas.

Detailed BMI Formulas

Metric Formula

When using kilograms (kg) for weight and meters (m) for height, the formula is:

BMI = weight(kg) / [height(m)]²

To use this formula, you first need to convert your height in centimeters to meters by dividing by 100. For example, a height of 165 cm is 1.65 m. Then, you square this value (1.65 * 1.65 = 2.7225). Finally, you divide your weight in kg by this squared height value.

Imperial Formula

When using pounds (lbs) for weight and inches (in) for height, the formula includes a conversion factor:

BMI = 703 × weight(lbs) / [height(in)]²

To use this formula, first convert your height entirely into inches. For example, a height of 5 feet 5 inches is (5 * 12) + 5 = 65 inches. Then, square this value (65 * 65 = 4225). Finally, divide your weight in pounds by the squared height and multiply the result by 703.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What is BMI and why is it important for women?

BMI, or Body Mass Index, is a measure that uses your height and weight to work out if your weight is healthy. For women, it’s a useful screening tool for potential health risks associated with being underweight, overweight, or obese. While it’s not a perfect measure (it doesn’t distinguish between fat and muscle), it provides a good starting point for assessing weight-related health.

2. Is BMI interpreted differently for women than for men?

The BMI calculation and the standard categories (underweight, normal, overweight, obese) are the same for both men and women. However, women naturally tend to have a higher percentage of body fat than men. A healthcare provider will consider BMI alongside other factors like waist circumference and overall body composition for a complete health assessment.

3. How accurate is the BMI calculator?

The calculation itself is mathematically precise. However, as a health indicator, BMI has limitations. It does not account for muscle mass, bone density, or fat distribution. For example, a very athletic woman with high muscle mass might have a high BMI that classifies her as “overweight” even though she has very little body fat. It is best used as a general guide, not a definitive diagnostic tool.

4. At what age is this BMI calculator intended for?

This calculator is designed for adult women aged 18 and over. BMI for children and teens is calculated using the same formula but is interpreted differently using age- and sex-specific percentile charts, as their body composition changes as they grow.

5. What should I do with my BMI results?

Your BMI result is a piece of information, not a diagnosis. If your result falls outside the “healthy weight” range, it may be a good idea to discuss it with your doctor or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized advice, consider other health factors, and help you create a sustainable plan for your health goals if needed.
